A Modern Basement Finish for a New Geist Home

Posted by Christopher Wright, CR Categories: Articles and Updates, Basement Projects, Geist Remodel Projects

This basement was completed for the owners of a new home in the Geist area of Indianapolis.

Design by MWHarris

Indianapolis Basement Radius WallBefore we began this project, the basement in this newly built Geist home was completely open. To hide the furnace and water heater, which were clustered around the stairs, the designer asked us to build a round enclosure, with removable maple panels for service.

Most basements have support columns which carry the weight of the floors above. These are often challenging for layout and finish. In this case, we wrapped them in drywall. On one end of the basement, we attached tall storage cabinets to the wrap which created a partition for a kid’s play area. At the other end, we placed seating on either side of another column for the theater seating area.

Duct work is often a challenge when thinking about finishing your basement ceilings. In this case, we left the exposed floor joists and duct work as they were, and sprayed everything in flat black paint for a modern, industrial look.

Geist Basement Finish Features

  • Radius wall around the furnace and water heater, wrapped in maple panels with exposed fasteners
  • Custom maple peninsula bar with granite counter, chamfered chicago rail, and glass mosaic tile
  • Angled column wraps which define a play area, game table area, and theater
  • Play area with tall maple storage cabinets
  • Theater with elevated seating platform and wing walls which hide the A/V components

  1. That’s a great look on the furnace enclosure. How are the panels removed and what are they made of? thanks.

    • The panels are 1/4″ maple veneer plywood–which bends quite well around the curved wall 2×4 framing. They are anchored to the framing with exposed lag screws that allow the panels to be removed for access to the water heater, furnace, and water softener.

  2. Been searching everywhere for a sink like that with the cups! (we have an old one by Kohler that’s dated and red – which I hate but loved the idea of the cups). Is it custom?

    • It wasn’t custom, but unfortunately this project was some years ago and I can’t recall the manufacturer. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
